NTB Artifacts in the Netherlands Have the Opportunity to Return, Regional Museum Prepares for Improvements

Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province is exploring the possibility of repatriating historical artefacts currently held in the Netherlands, following what officials described as positive communication with the central government.

Acting Head of the Provincial Culture Office, Ahmad Nur Aulia, said the central government had in principle given the green light for the return of the objects, provided that the region’s museum facilities meet required standards.

“The recommendation is clear: our museum must improve, both in terms of management, security and storage standards,” he said.

According to Aulia, upgrades will be carried out gradually, including improvements to security systems, collection management and storage design.

“If all standards are met, it is very possible that these important artefacts can be returned to West Nusa Tenggara,” he added.

The potential of returning is seen as strategically important for strengthening cultural identity and boosting historical tourism in the province.

“We want younger generations to be able to see their ancestors’ heritage in their own region, not only overseas,” Aulia said.
