Once-Popular Senggigi Faces Decline, Government Plans Event-Led and Infrastructure-Driven Revival

The Senggigi tourist area in West Lombok, once an iconic destination of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is now facing serious challenges due to a significant decline in tourist arrivals.

The NTB Provincial Government is preparing a series of strategic measures to revive tourism activities in the area.

Head of the NTB Tourism and Creative Economy Office, Ahmad Nur Aulia, said the revival of Senggigi will focus on strengthening events, revitalizing infrastructure, and cross-sector collaboration.

“Senggigi has extraordinary potential. However, without sustainable events and proper management, it will be difficult to restore its appeal,” Ahmad said.

One of the key infrastructure projects is the jetty. The government plans to increase docking capacity to boost tourist arrivals, especially via sea routes. This move is expected to stimulate economic activity in the surrounding area.

In addition, art and cultural events that were previously held at the Senggigi Art Market will be developed into regular programs. According to Ahmad, sustainable tourist attractions are crucial to building a strong tourism ecosystem.

“Events should not be merely ceremonial. They must become the lifeblood of Senggigi so that tourists have reasons to visit and stay longer,” he said.

He added that the local government is also opening opportunities for collaboration with creative communities and private businesses to create innovative attractions that match current tourist preferences.
