MATARAM, Indonesia — The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial government is accelerating efforts to develop integrated tourism with a focus on quality and sustainable travel, a senior regional official said on Friday.
NTB is preparing 10 interconnected priority destinations, including Mandalika, Senggigi, the Gili Tramena islands, Mount Rinjani, as well as the Samota and Tambora areas on Sumbawa Island, according to Baiq Nelly Yuniatri, head of NTB’s Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA).
“We want tourists not to visit just one spot, but to move through a connected chain of destinations,” Yuniatri said in Mataram on Jan. 30.
The province is also drawing lessons from Bali’s experience with mass tourism, which has led to congestion and environmental strain. As a result, NTB is prioritising service quality, visitor capacity limits and tighter regulation of accommodation development, she said.
The integrated tourism approach is being promoted through a joint branding initiative with Bali and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), aimed at strengthening the eastern Indonesian region’s appeal in both domestic and international markets.
